Samsung says it has revolutionised the smartphone with its new Galaxy S8. The Korean company is looking to redeem itself after a scandal over its last big phone release, the Note 7.
I'm here outside of Lincoln Centre in New York, where Samsung just unveiled its latest smartphone, the Galaxy S8. Pressure was high on Samsung today, given that its last phone, the 7, suffered a massive recall because of a malfunctioning battery. So far, it seems analysts are pretty happy with what Samsung has put out today. They say it's one of the most innovative smartphones in the years and should really be able to rival Apple's iPhone.
Samsung put out the S8, its latest rival to the iPhone, to much fanfare in New York. Innovation has been slow for smartphones in the past few years, leading many people to hold back on upgrading. But analysts say the latest from Samsung should push the market forward again with a few big changes.
I honestly think this is the first product in a very long time which moves things forwards. The fact that they've completely eliminated the bezel at the sides, really reduced it at the top, and that they've got this Infinity Display, as they're branding it-- I honestly think this launch will give Apple pause for thought. It's a very strong product. They've still-- Samsung has still got a long way to go in software and services, and obviously, that is where Apple is very, very strong. But it has-- Samsung has scale, and it is working on this software and services vision. So I think it's job done, from Samsung's perspective, and all eyes are now firmly on Apple.
The main new feature is a display that wraps around to the edges of the phone, stretching the screen and eliminating the Home button. With the extra space, you can divide the screen to do a few things at the same time, such as watch a video while texting or sending an email. The challenge now is to make sure nothing goes wrong with the rollout, as Samsung tries to pull itself out of the fiasco with the Note 7.
