Nicholas Westcott (Letters, June 21) is wrong about the Tory party’s members’ ability to choose winners. We did elect David Cameron and Boris Johnson, both of whom won general elections. We also elected Liz Truss who, brought down by hostile Tory MPs, was never given the opportunity to face the electorate.

We did not elect Theresa May, who almost lost, or Rishi Sunak for whom the odds are not favourable, and certainly worse than they would have been under Truss. So the members’ record is excellent. It is the party’s MPs who are the problem.
