Liverpool/Juve match prompts memories

Liverpool will play Juventus in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, the first time the clubs will have met since the Heysel Stadium disaster at the 1985 European Cup final. Friday's draw for the last eight also paired Chelsea with Bayern Munich, the two Milan clubs Internazionale and AC, and Olympique Lyon with PSV Eindhoven.

Liverpool and Juventus will play just two months before the 20th anniversary of the disaster in Brussels in which 39 people died following a riot by Liverpool fans at the match which the Turin club won 1-0. If Liverpool win through, they will play the winners of the Chelsea-Bayern tie. Inter or AC Milan will meet Lyon or PSV in the other semi-final.

Meanwhile, in the draw for the Uefa Cup quarter-finals, Newcastle United will play Sporting Lisbon.

* Greek sprinters Costas Kenteris and Katerina Thanou have been cleared of all charges connected with missing three doping tests, including one on the eve of last year's Athens Olympics, the Greek Athletics Federation announced on Friday. Their former coach Christos Tzekos, however, was banned for four years from any participation in athletics.

The pair could now return to the track unless there is an appeal from the International Association of Athletics Federations. Kenteris, 31, who won a 200m gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Games, and Thanou, 30, a 100m silver medallist at the same Olympics, had faced a two-year ban if they had been found guilty.

Kostas Panagopoulos, head of the disciplinary committee, said: "There was no proof whatsoever that there was any notification of the athletes. Everything leads to the conclusion that the notification chain [of a doping test] stopped at Mr Tzekos."
