Stormy Daniels lawyer arrested in Los Angeles
The stories that matter on money and politics in the race for the White House
The lawyer who represents Stormy Daniels in her case against Donald Trump has been arrested on suspicion of domestic violence, according to a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson.
Michael Avenatti, who has said he is considering a run for president as a Democratic candidate in 2020, was arrested on Wednesday, said Tony Im, a LAPD spokesperson.
The arrest concerned events alleged to have occurred on Tuesday, said Mr Im. Bail was set at $50,000.
Mr Avenatti called the allegations against him "completely bogus".
"I have never been physically abusive in my life nor was I last night. Any accusations to the contrary are fabricated and meant to do harm to my reputation. I look forward to being fully exonerated," he said in a statement.
The arrest was first reported by TMZ, a celebrity gossip site.
Mr Avenatti rose to prominence earlier this year as an antagonist to Mr Trump. He represents Ms Daniels in her ongoing lawsuit against the president, who she claimed to have had an affair with in 2006.
Ms Daniels is attempting to nullify a non-disclosure agreement she signed. Mr Trump has always denied the affair.
Last month, the president had an initial victory in the ongoing litigation after a judge threw out a separate defamation claim Ms Daniels had filed against Mr Trump.
Mr Avenatti later represented a woman who made allegations against Brett Kavanaugh, the Supreme Court justice appointed by Mr Trump.
In October, Chuck Grassley, the Republican Senate Judiciary Committee chair, referred Mr Avenatti and his client to the US Department of Justice, alleging they made false statements. At the time, Mr Avenatti welcomed the referral. “Let the truth be known,” he said.
