Join a global conversation

More than 1,000 cross-sector leaders from around the world are meeting in New York for the Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting, where this year’s theme focuses on involving the right people and resources needed to drive effective action on global challenges. The initiative runs until Thursday, starting with a discussion on the impact of women in economics, education, politics and society. One of several ways individuals can participate is through Twitter #CGI2013.

Discuss women and philanthropy

Her Excellency Sheikha Dr Aisha Bint Faleh Al Thani, a member of Qatar’s Supreme Education Council, is giving a keynote speech at City University Cass Business School in the UK about the difference between women-led philanthropy and philanthropy for women. She will be joined by, among others, Jenny Harrow, professor of voluntary sector management at Cass and Tariq Cheema, founder and chief executive of the World Congress of Muslim Philanthropy, at the workshop, which is being hosted by the Academy of Philanthropy.

The Asian Business Case Competition at Nanyang Business School is hosting a sustainability symposium as part of its annual competition which closes on Friday. Nine international business schools will present innovative sustainability ideas that are being adopted today. Schools include the University of Florida Warrington School of Business in the US and the University of Alberta in Canada.

Take an EMBA masterclass

The Paris School of Business is hosting a free masterclass in partnership with the Franco-British Chamber of Commerce that will teach corporate governance in a cross-cultural environment and include networking opportunities.

Alumni event: New York

The private equity programme at Columbia Business School is hosting an alumni networking event which will focus on industry trends in healthcare. The event will be hosted by Alston & Bird LLP.

Become a leader

The 2013 PRME Summit is taking place at IEDC-Bled School of Management in Slovenia. Titled New Ways of Developing Leaders for the Future We Want, the summit is a forum to share lessons in innovation. Speakers include Nancy Adler, the S. Bronfman Chair in Management at McGill University Desautels Faculty of Management in Canada and George Kell, executive director of UN Global Compact.

In a breakfast briefing, Thomas Lawton, professor of strategy and international management at the Open University Business School in the UK will argue that the most successful organisations, regardless of the sector in which they operate, will align market and non-market strategy to achieve and sustain competitive advantage.

Discuss corporate governance

Henley Business School in the UK is inviting researchers and practitioners in corporate governance and accountability to attend a conference discussing the challenges in corporate governance in the 21st century. Papers presented at the conference will focus on ways to tackle unethical behaviour and nurture societal trust in companies and financial institutions.

Edmund Phelps, 2006 Nobel laureate in economics and director of the Center on Capitalism and Society at Columbia University is speaking at Rotman School of Management in Canada about his book Mass Flourishing: How Grassroots Innovation Created Jobs, Challenge and Change.

Marcus Powe, entrepreneur in residence at RMIT College of Business, leads a webinar for the Association of MBAs on creativity and innovation, inviting participants to play with their ideas and explore simple frameworks to increase their choices for sustainable growth.

Watch an MBA Cup Regatta

SDA Bocconi School of Management in Italy is organising a regatta for 23 boat crews from schools including Harvard, MIT Sloan, HEC Paris, Iese and LBS. Held in collaboration with the Yacht Club Italiano and Rolex, the boat race will take place in the Mediterranean at Santa Margherita. Approximately 350 MBA students will compete in the three-day event which will include social and networking activities.

Teams featuring in UC San Diego Rady School of Management’s Global Business Simulation Challenge are being announced. The challenge links to the launch of VirBELA in October 2013, a 3D learning platform with $1.7m start-up funding from the Graduate Management Admission Council. Each team will manage a simulated automobile company with the objective to build sales, improve profitability and maximise shareholder value by making quarterly inputs over 16-20 virtual quarters. The winning team will be awarded $50,000.

Connect with thought leaders

NYU Stern School of Business is launching a new event series for prospective applicants interested in their full-time MBA and executive MBA programmes. The series will start this month by introducing participants to Stern’s faculty, who will share their views on the future of a diverse set of industries. Professors at the first event include Charles Murphy, a former investment banker and Robert Whitelaw, chair of Stern’s finance department.
