Polanski’s wife Emmanuelle Seigner is impressive as tarty, streetwise Vanda (shades of her role in 1988’s Frantic), who auditions to play the titular Venus on stage.
She proves perfect for the part: in fact, the director (Mathieu Amalric) is spooked that she knows the entire play by heart.
Power shifts inexorably to Vanda as the lines blur between roles and reality, and the pair morph into their characters.
This is a clever adaptation of David Ives’ play, crackling with eroticism, although amounting to little more than a filmed scenes from a stage rehearsal.
