Eurozone finance ministers have endorsed Philip Lane as the next chief economist of the European Central Bank, confirming that he will take over the role at the end of May.
Mr Lane, currently Ireland’s central bank governor, was approved by ministers at a meeting in Brussels on Monday, according to diplomats present in the room. He was the only candidate put forward by governments for the role.
The central banker will succeed Belgian economist Peter Praet, whose eight-year term is coming to an end.
