Every Thursday, a business school professor, an expert in his or her field, will define five key terms on FT Lexicon, our online economics, business and finance glossary.

Rob Dixon has been a member of staff at Durham Business School since 1992. He was appointed a senior lecturer in management and subsequently promoted in 1995 to a readership in accountancy and finance and became a chair of management accounting in 1998. He has held various administrative roles in the school including chair of the board of studies and director of the MBA programme. In April 2008 Prof Dixon was appointed dean of Durham Business School.

His research interests are broad and include investigations of the contribution of venture capitalists and the impact of regulation on business. He has held visiting professorships in Malaysia, Hong Kong, France and Finland.

Prof Dixon is the author of a number of books and articles on management and has published extensively in journals on financial management and performance appraisal. His current research covers health service finances, control and accounting issues in Africa and eastern Europe.

He has carried out accreditation reviews for Equis, AACSB and AMBA and is a member of the Association of MBAs’ International Accreditation Advisory Board.
