Scott Clyman, 39, is a former fighter pilot and founding trustee and board director of the American Airpower Museum. The museum, in Farmingdale, New York, stands on the site of the former Republic Aviation factory, which produced many important military aircraft, including the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt fighter. Clyman is also a consultant to companies in the aviation sector.
Jacket by Cockpit
My father’s father served in the army Air Corps during the second world war and my mom’s dad worked as a civilian employee for the air force, so I have flying in my blood. This is the A2 classic pilot’s jacket that originated in the 1930s. I had one as a child and, when I became a pilot, I finally felt as though I had earned it.
Shirt by Thomas Pink
It’s important to have a good shirt that can last and is resilient for travel, especially because I do so much of it for work. This checked fitted style always looks clean and smart and is easy to accessorise with ties and cufflinks.
Tie by Hermès
The museum is actually where almost all of the major aviation companies were started, so we do a lot of ceremonial events where I have to wear a tie. When you’re in dress uniform as a pilot, you have to wear a tie. A lot of my everyday style is carry-over from my time as an officer.
Trousers by Brooks Brothers
I like the no-frills men’s clothing from Brooks Brothers, which is where I got these trousers. Aviator trousers were traditionally gabardine, like these – my grandfather had a pair.
Belt by Prada
This reversible black-and-brown belt is great quality, good for both dress events and casual.
Watch by IWC
This watch was handed down as a gift from my father. It’s a vintage aviator’s watch from the early 1940s. As a pilot it’s important to have a precision timepiece and IWC movements are exactly that.
Shoes by Cole Haan
Coming from a family where my parents work with leather – they own a company that supplies military clothing – I can always spot a good pair of shoes. These brown lace-ups suit my style because they are relatively conservative.
